With over 40 years of experience in the oilseed extraction industry, Mr. Hon Swee Sang is a highly accomplished professional who began his career with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He started as a Maintenance Supervisor in a sugar mill in Papua New Guinea and later went on to work as a Mill Engineer at Tawau Edible Oil and Kudat Edible Oil Mill, Sabah. During this time, he gained valuable experience and knowledge in the maintenance, operation, and design of machinery and equipment used in the extraction of oil from various oilseeds. 2. Share with us how Avatar Technology or known as dynamic sterilization, for the extraction of crude palm oil helps the work environment, sustainability, and profitability.
The advantages of using Avatar Technology in palm oil extraction over traditional systems are manifold. Firstly, it optimizes water consumption, requiring less than 200 liters of water per tonne of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to be converted into steam and used in the sterilization process. This means that there is no need to add water during the pressing process, as the natural water content of the fresh fruit is sufficient. This results in less dilution water required and only 100-120 kg of steam used in the sterilization stage, and a maximum of 200 kg of steam per FFB processed tonne.
Secondly, Avatar Technology allows for the optimization of biomass by producing rachis fibers with lengths of approximately 1 to 10 cm and low humidity, while also reducing the generation of final effluents to between 350 and 370 liters per FFB tonne. This offers the possibility of making low-cost compost from the mixture of all the effluents together with the final fibers, achieving the concept of Zero Waste palm oil mills.
Next, this technology reduces oil losses by up to 0.2-0.35% over total fibers, thus increasing the oil extraction rate. By pressing the whole fruit bunch, losses due to attached fruits, loose fruits, unthreshed green fruits, and oil impregnation in rachis are avoided. This results in totally controlled losses of 1% +/- 0.2%.The technology is also flexible and appropriate for processing hybrid fruit, which is difficult to press in conventional processing plants.
Lastly, Avatar Technology decreases operating and investment costs by requiring less plant-covered area per installed tonne compared to known conventional processes. The elimination of equipment such as rail wagons, tractors for moving trucks or mechanical systems, rail wagon turners, threshing drums, and empty bunches presses, reduces the number of processing machines and lowers mill maintenance costs by up to 20%. Investment in civil works and the plot of land for the implementation of a project is also decreased.
3. How does this technology assist in the circular economy concept? How does it obtain the same time as the maximum possible oil extraction rate (OER)
Avatar Technology contributes to the circular economy concept by reducing waste generation and promoting the reuse of by-products. It allows for the production of a low-cost compost from the mixture of all the effluents together with the final fibers, achieving the concept of Zero Waste palm oil mills. This compost can be used as a natural fertilizer, promoting the reuse of waste and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
In addition, Avatar Technology reduces operating and investment costs by eliminating equipment such as rail wagons, tractors, mechanical systems, threshing drums, and empty bunches presses. By reducing the number of processing machines, there is a reduction in mill maintenance costs, which also contributes to the circular economy concept by promoting the reuse of resources.
Regarding oil extraction rate (OER), Avatar Technology allows for the maximum possible extraction rate while minimizing losses. The technology enables the whole fruit bunch to be pressed, including attached fruits, loose fruits, unthreshed green fruits, and rachis. This process ensures that the oil extraction rate is maximized, and process losses are minimized by up to 0.2 - 0.35% over total fibers, which is significantly lower than conventional systems. The result is a higher yield of crude palm oil, which is an essential aspect of the palm oil industry.
